Requirements To create a shortcut trust, you must have Enterprise Admin or Domain Admin privileges in both domains within the forest. Each trust is assigned a password that must be known to the administrators of both domains in the relationship.

A realm trust can be established between any non Windows Kerberos version 5 realm and a Windows Server 2003 domain to allow cross-platform interoperability with secu rity services based on other Kerberos version 5 implementations, such as UNIX or MIT. Realm trusts can be switched from nontransitive to transitive and back and can be either one- or two-way. Requirements To create a realm trust, you must have Enterprise Admin or Domain Admin privileges for the domain in the Windows Server 2003 forest and the appropri ate administrative privileges in the target Kerberos realm.

An easier way to organize your favorites is to use Windows Explorer. In recognition of that fact, Internet Explorer provides an easy way to get to the %UserProfile%\Favorites folder: Hold down the Shift key while you open the Favorites menu and choose Organize Favorites. Figure 12-9 shows the result.

You can create an external trust to form a one- or two-way nontransitive relationship with domains outside of your forest. External trusts are sometimes necessary when users need access to resources located in a Windows NT 4 domain or in a domain located within a separate forest that is not joined by a forest trust. When a trust is established between a domain in a forest and a domain outside of that forest, security principals from the external domain can access resources in the internal domain. Active Directory creates a foreign security principal object in the internal domain to represent each security principal from the trusted external domain. These foreign security principals can become members of domain local groups in the internal domain. You can view foreign security principals in the Active Directory Users And Computers console when Advanced Features are enabled. To enable Advanced Fea tures, select Advanced Features from the View menu on the Active Directory Users And Computers console.

Many data-centric applications currently limit themselves to tables and stored procedures for data access. An additional area that may offer benefits and is easier to use than stored procedures is user-defined functions. The two main flavors of user-defined functions are scalar and table-valued functions. Scalar functions return a single value, which is handy for quick lookup translations. Table-valued functions return results that can be consumed as if they were returned by the table directly. Similar to stored procedures, additional functionality can be added to the function within certain limitations. Unlike stored procedures, you can reuse the return results natively on the server as part of other server-side queries. When building new components and applications, consider how user-defined

Accessing Resources Across Domains Joined by an External Trust U s i n g Active Directory Domains And Trusts, you can determine the scope of authentication between two domains that are joined by an external trust. You can set selective authentication differently for outgoing and incoming external trusts, which allows you to make flexi ble authentication decisions between external domains. functions may offer additional functionality and flexibility over stored procedures for fetching results. To see how we can use user-defined functions, let s revisit our stored procedure from listing 8.13, which returned the count of books by publisher. To begin, we need to establish the function that we re going to use. To avoid naming conflicts, we ll name our database function fnBookCountForPublisher. (See listing 8.18.)
