Within a user s profile folder, you ll find a hierarchy of folders, as shown in Figure 13-1. The root of the profile (that is, the subfolder of Documents And Settings where the user name is the folder name) contains Ntuser.dat, which is the user portion of the registry (in other words, the HKCU hive). In addition, a computer that s a member of a Windows NT Server domain might have an Ntuser.pol file, a file that has system policy settings. (System policy is the Windows NT predecessor to Group Policy, which was introduced with Windows 2000.)

Object and collection initializers are particularly useful when used together in the same piece of code. The following two equivalent code blocks show how initializers allow us to write shorter code. Let s compare some code with object and collection initializers to code without. Here is the code with object and collection initializers:

Group policies are collections of user and computer configuration settings that specify how programs, network resources, and the operating system work for users and com puters in an organization. Group Policy can be set up for computers, sites, domains, and OUs. For example, using group policies, you can determine the programs that are available to users, the programs that appear on the user s desktop, and Start menu options. Although the name Group Policy suggests that you might set policies for glo bal, domain local, or global groups, this is not the case. Instead, think of Group Policy as groupings of policy settings that are linked to computers, sites, domains, and OUs.

Off the Record As stated in this section, group policies apply to computer and user accounts. A common misconception is that group policies can be applied to groups. Although group policies do not apply to groups, group membership can affect the application of Group Policy. For example, if a user or computer account belongs to a group that is specifically denied the ability to apply Group Policy, that account will not receive the Group Policy. This concept is known as filtering GPO scope with security groups, and is discussed in Lesson 3.

Managing User Profiles The profile includes the following folders:

This hidden folder contains application-specific data, such as a custom dictionary for word processing programs, junk sender lists for an e-mail program, a CD database for a program that plays music CDs, and so on. Application vendors decide what information to put in this folder. This folder contains Internet Explorer cookies. This folder contains all items stored on the user s desktop, including files and shortcuts. This folder contains Internet Explorer favorites. This hidden folder contains settings and files that don t roam with the profile, either because they re machine specific or because they re so large that it s not worthwhile to include them in a roaming user profile, which must be copied from and to a network server at each logon and logoff. (Roaming user profiles are discussed in the next section.) For example, the staging area for burning CDs which is machine specific and potentially large is stored in a subfolder of Local Settings. The Local Settings folder contains four subfolders:

To create a specific desktop configuration for users, you create GPOs, which are col lections of Group Policy settings. Each computer running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 has one local GPO and can, in addition, be subject to any number of nonlocal (Active Directory based) GPOs.

This folder contains the user s Internet Explorer browsing history. This folder contains temporary files created by applications. This folder contains the offline cache for Internet

One local GPO is stored on each computer whether or not the computer is part of an Active Directory environment or a networked environment. A local GPO affects only the computer on which it is stored. However, because the local GPO settings can be overridden by nonlocal GPOs, the local GPO is the least influential if the computer is in an Active Directory environment. In a non-networked environment (or in a networked environment lacking a Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 domain controller), the local GPO s settings are more important because they are not overridden by nonlocal GPOs. By default, only nodes under Security Settings are configured for local GPOs; settings in other parts of a local GPO s namespace are not enabled or disabled. The local GPO is stored in %Systemroot%\System32\GroupPolicy.
