Let s first examine the class of some literal values: class of 2003 --> integer class of 1.5 --> real class of "1000" --> string Now, let s take some literal numeric strings and see which ones can be coerced into reals or integers: "1000" as integer --> 1000 "1000" as real --> 1000.0 "1,000,000" as integer -- error: Can't make "1,000,000" into type integer. "-3.14" as number --> -3.14 Funny enough, when coercing strings to numbers, AppleScript respects the ignoring/ considering attributes. In the following script, the numeric string "-3.14" was coerced into the number 314 since both the period (punctuation) and the minus symbol (hyphen) were ignored: ignoring hyphens and punctuation "-3.14" as number end ignoring --> 314 When you do math, some operations return results as reals and some return results as integers. The implications aren t great because you can process both reals and integers pretty much interchangeably without choking AppleScript.
